BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — Louisiana's treasurer wants to apologize, if you haven't gotten the money you deserve. We're talking about the state's unclaimed property program. Treasurer John Kennedy says there's currently a three and a half month backlog for people trying to get their checks.
The program has returned $250 million to more than 200,000 people in the state.
Kennedy says his office is doing everything it can to clear the backlog, so more people can get the money that's rightfully theirs.
"We're streamlining the process to limit the number of approvals to really small amounts. We're trying to shift more focus off the phone and onto the internet. That'll be faster for taxpayers and faster for the state," says Kennedy.
There's more than $500 million in unclaimed money still owed to more than half a million Louisianans.
