BATON ROUGE, LA — East Baton Rouge Sheriff's detectives are currently investigating four separate thefts that occurred this past month by scams that involve individuals pretending to be a local radio personality and asking victims to send money for uniforms for job openings at the local radio station.
According to reports, the individuals are approaching or contacting people claiming to have various jobs at the radio station and offering generous benefits with the position.
The scammers then have the victims provide them with personal information (over the phone) which includes their names, addresses, and social security numbers and also have the victims send money via Western Union to a person in the New Orleans area (allegedly from the New Orleans head office). The scammers have told victims the money is for uniforms for the job.
At this time three victims have come forward after sending $60 and a fourth sent $160. When the vcitims attempted to contact the actual radio personality, they were then informed that there was no job offer, there is no New Orleans office and the radio station would never request potential employees pay for uniforms in advance.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office would like to warn the public about “Advanced Fee Scams” where persons or companies attempt to have the victims send money prior to receiving anything, such as job offers, lottery winnings, or government refunds owed them (especially as tax time has arrived).
We would also like the public’s assistance in helping to determine if there are any additional victims who may have been promised a job by a person pretending to be a radio personality and who have proof that they sent money via wire transfer for uniforms or other work-related expenses prior to getting “the job.”
Anyone with information concerning these incidents or the identity of the suspects is asked to contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-5000.
Crime Stoppers is also offering a cash reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at (225) 344- STOP or (225) 344-7867.
