NBC News — Anti-austerity protests in Athens, Greece, turned violent friday. Police fired tear gas at demonstrators as thousands of striking workers marched to parliament to protest against government cuts and tax increases. Unions have called for a 48 hour strike in protest of European Union and International Monetary Fund measures to bail out the country.
In order to secure the funding, Greece had to commit to new, tougher reforms. The strikers are bringing the country to a near standstill. Public transportation has come to a halt. many public services are closed, several private businesses are closed as well.
