State leaders are concerned about a new plan to manage oyster safety.
They think it will negatively impact Louisiana's oyster industry. The FDA has announced plans to ban sales of raw oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico, unless treated to destroy potentially deadly bacteria.
Oyster processors said the new requirements could double or even triple the cost. They said adequate measures already are being taken.
More than a dozen people die each year in the United States after eating raw oysters infected with the bacteria.
