Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Round one of faculty layoffs are underway at Southern University.
The school laid off around ten staff members, including tenured architecture professor, John Delgado, who’s last day will be February 15.
Back in October, the university declared a state of financial emergency, making it easier to lay off tenured faculty members.
Students at Southern believe their university can still bounce back despite the layoffs.
"Every college has their trials and tribulations,” stated student Nayo Andrews. “It just all depends on how they deal with it, and I think if they give us a little time and let us recover from this great loss - our budget cuts and everything - we could come back on our feet. We could bounce back very easily."
Ultimately, around 30 tenured professors are expected to lose their jobs over the next several months.
