Addis, LA (NBC33) — "One of these days, we're going to wake up dead," says Addis resident Richard Ramagos.
Richard Ramagos has lived in Addis for more than fifty years. He's still in shock about the oil spill at the Shintech plant just down the road.
"These plants, they do whatever they want to o around here. I guess there's nothing us little old people can do," says Ramagos.
According to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the spill happened because workers at the plant mistakenly thought a tank they removed was empty.
"On Sunday, they had some workers working on a tank. The tank was supposed to be empty and when they started to take the tank down, it was not and so oil fuel was spilled out of the tank, went down Sid Richardson Road and across LA-1," says D.E.Q. representative Rodney Mallett.
Crews are out here right now cleaning up the oil that was spilled out of the Shintech facility on Sunday and they expect that within the next couple of days to have all that oil gone, but it's still not known how much oil actually leaked out of the plant.
I tried to reach Shintech for comment on the incident, but they hung up on me twice. D.E.Q. says though that the company did follow the proper procedures for cleaning up the spill. Richard Ramagos, though, says Shintech needs to pay more attention so that something like this never happens again.
"I tell ya one thing, that stuff, those plants need to more careful...It's just careless stuff that's all I can say."
