Louisiana (NBC33) — Former New Roads Mayor Tommy Nelson will spend the next eleven years behind bars for his part in Operation: Blighted Officials.
The sentence handed down this afternoon in federal court. Nelson was convicted after just an hour of deliberation back in June.
He was found guilty on seven charges, including wire fraud, lying to the FBI and racketeering.
Nelson took $22,000 worth of cash and gifts from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen.
A judge ordered Nelson to start serving his sentence on February 20. A lawyer for nelson says conviction and sentencing will be appealed.
