BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge Parish School System will now use a lottery system to decide where children will go to school. Starting on Monday January 23, parents can apply in person at the top two schools where they want their child to attend. Then during the week of February 13, parents will find out whether their child got into one of those schools. This replaces the first come first served process from previous years.
"It changed because of the demand and having parents staying up all night at schools, camping out, wating in line, just not convenient for families," says Bobbie Robertson of the E.B.R. School System.
There are more than 2,000 pre-k students applying for only 1800 spots. Parents who don't get their children into one of their schools of choice will receive information from the school system on where else they can send their child.
