BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge Parish School System will now use a lottery program to decide where children will go to school.
Starting next Monday, parents can apply in person at the top two schools where they want their child to attend.
On the week of February 13, parents will find out whether their child got into one of these schools. This replaces the first-come-first-served process from previous years.
"It changed because of the demand and having parents staying up all night at schools, camping out, waiting in line,” stated Bobbie Robertson, a representative for the EBR Public School System. “(It’s) just not convenient for families."
There are more than 2,000 Pre-K students applying for only 1,800 spots. Parents who don't get their children into one of their schools of choice will receive information from the district on where else they can send their child.
