GONZALES, LA (NBC33) — Area law enforcement officers show you how the Polar Bear Plunge is done. They jumped into the cold waters outside of Cabela's in Gonzales this afternoon to promote the upcoming event.
What is a Polar Bear Plunge?
"It's fun. It's crazy,” Pat Carpenter Bourgeouis, a representative with the Special Olympics, explained. “It's something fun to do and not many people are willing to do so get your friend and your family and come on out and join these law enforcement officers."
The real Polar Bear Plunge is an annual event held to raise funds for the Special Olympics. Every year the Louisiana State Police participates, but you can join them, too.
Just how cold is that water?
"That was is certainly colder than it looks,” Trooper Russell Graham, Louisiana State Police, admitted. “You know the guys who jumped in before me, jumped in and didn't make any noises, didn't make any sounds, probably because they couldn't. I tell you when I hit that water, it was cold."
The main event will happen on January 28, 2012 at Cabela’s. Click here for more information.
