There is more information Sunday about a devastating bus crash that sent the driver of a car to the hospital. The collision happened around 6:00 Saturday evening in Albuquerque. The bus was headed west bound on Central near Interstate 25 when a car going the other direction turned in front of the bus and was hit.
The impact was so strong that it threw riders on the Rapid Ride out of their seats and into the aisle. Surprisingly, the passengers weren't seriously hurt. Video from inside the bus shows two separate impacts: the first, smaller one was when the bus hit the car. The bus didn't stop until the second, larger impact when the bus sandwiched the car between it and an overpass pillar.
The driver of the bus, Albert Sandoval, says when he saw the car turn in front of him, it was already too late to stop. "I was hoping it would stop. I was pressing the brake and it just kept going like in slow motion,” he said.
Sandoval says he got out to make sure the driver of the car was okay. He says he was relieved to hear the driver talking. Police say the driver of the car was at fault for running a red light. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
