A Prairieville water treatment company says it's working quickly to keep waste in a containment pond and out of a nearby bayou.
Ascension Wastewater Treatment Inc. says a two-foot hole was discovered in the levee of the Ole Homestead Oxidation pond.
The Department of Environmental quality says a boater made the complaint after seeing the sewage spew into Bayou Henderson.
Ascension Wastewater says the treated waste normally flows into the bayou through a pipe, and it isn’t harming the environment.
"Anytime any facility does not abide by its permit it is a cause for a concern and it needs to be rectified" says Rodney Malett with DEQ.
Ascension Wastewater says they have secured a $40,000 loan to fix not just the hole but the entire section of the levee.
