A spokesperson for Angola State Penitentiary says a prisoner has escaped. Earlier today, Henry Smith, a 44-year-old white man escaped into the hills adjacent to Angola. He was assigned to litter duty at the prison.
Smith is serving a Life sentence for 2nd Degree Murder - committed in 1981 in Jefferson Parish. He's been locked up at Angola since 1982.
The Angola Chase Team including the river chase team and Deputies from the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office are searching the area between Angola and Pickneyville, Mississippi.
Louisiana State Police, LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office have set up roadblocks in the area. In addition, the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office helicopter is in the air - looking for 44-year-old Henry Smith.
Bloodhounds are also on the hunt for Smith. Officials coordinating the search says this is a very rugged and thickly wooded area. However, the people searching are very familiar with the territory.
The last time a prisoner escaped from Angola was in September of 2003, and that prisoner was caught.
