NBC News — Argentine President Cristina Fernandez is undergoing surgery to remove a thyroid tumor. Supporters started gathering outside the hospital where the surgery will take place and in the capital's Plaza de Mayo early wednesday morning. Fifty eight year old Fernandez was sworn in for a second term last month.
A routine medical exam detected papillary thyroid carcinoma. Doctors say it was found before it spread and expect her condition to be curable without chemotherapy. Argentina's vice president will be in charge during the operation and for 20 days while Fernandez recovers.
