NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 10. All eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic are closed on I-10 near Michoud, and traffic is being diverted off the interstate westbound at I-510 and eastbound at Chef Menteur Highway.
Police say the accident happened about 4 a.m and involved about 40 vehicles.
The accident sent 22 people to the hospital. Officials said another 37 people refused treatment.
One firefighter also suffered a laceration to his face.
Investigators have not yet released the victims' names, and haven't said what caused the accident. It happened during foggy conditions before dawn on Thursday.
The wreck caused a miles-long backup on the freeway during the morning rush hour commute, as tow trucks labored to clear the disabled vehicles from the busy stretch of interstate.
