A Delta II rocket was finally launched Friday morning from Cape Canaveral, Florida after spending the week waiting for good weather.
The rocket is carrying two missile defense satellites to monitor and warn if any missiles are launched toward American targets.
The early warning satellites, called "demos", cost 1.5 billion dollars and weigh nearly 5,000 pounds.
They have power-generating solar wings and are equipped with infrared and visible sensors to spot missile launches and track attacks.
