Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: the Louisiana State Police say the scene of the accident is all cleared.
An 18-wheeler was traveling in the east bound lane of I-12 near the O’Neal exit at around 6:00 a.m. when the driver failed to stay in the proper lane. That’s when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a concrete barricade.
The area where the crash happened was in a construction zone.
“Obviously, when you enter a construction zone, you should slow down and pay attention to your surroundings,” Trooper Russell Graham said when asked if he believes the construction zone played a factor in this crash. “Failure to do so will result in an accident, like this one.”
The 18-wheeler was carrying a load of pipes that then spilled out on to the roadway, and landed in the West bound lane of I-12, directly into oncoming traffic. The incident caused a seven car pile up. Six people suffered injuries from this wreck, including the driver of the 18-wheeler. We’re told all of those injuries were non-life threatening.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was issued a citation.
