Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 UPDATE: The closure of the Istrouma Post Office in Baton Rouge may be put on hold.
Several U.S. senators have asked the USPS to delay the closing or consolidation of any post office or mail processing facility until May 15, 2012.
The postal service will continue to look at ways to make cuts to cover the loss of revenue.
The postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage products and services to fund its operations.
This could be the last year you can use the Istrouma Post Office in Baton Rouge to mail your packages.
It is one of more than 3,600 branches that the USPS is considering shutting down.
Fifty other post offices in Louisiana may soon close their doors.
Those who live near the Istrouma Post Office say if the branch closes they don't know what they'll do.
"It'd be very inconvenient; like I said, I would have to go further out to drop off my packages and pick up mail that's certified,” stated post office frequenter Sandra Carter.
The Istrouma branch is the only post office location being considered for closure in Baton Rouge.
