LOUISIANA (NBC33) — EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH - The Baker School Board has their choice for the next superintendent down to two. The list includes current Acting Superintendent Ulysses Joseph and Spurgeon Banyard, the current Director of Student Services in a Mississippi school district. A total of five people applied for the job. The former superintendent, Estes Taplin, left when the board could not agree on a contract renewal.
ORLEANS PARISH - One person is dead and another hurt after a plane skids off the runway at Lakefront Airport last night. A spokesman for the airport says the pilot had a medical emergency as the plane came in for a landing when the plane ran off the tarmac and started leaking fuel. The pilot was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. The passenger was hurt, but is expected to be okay.
PLAQUEMINES PARISH - Former Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Irvin "Jiff " Hingle has pleaded guilty to planning a bribery scheme involving jail construction. The 60 year-old Hingle is now facing up to five years in prison. 42 year-old Aaron Bennett, a businessman overseeing construction of the parish jail, pleaded guilty to bribing Hingle.
The sheriff resigned just before charges in the case were announced in October.
Federal prosecutors say Bennett paid Hingle $30,000 in bribes after the sheriff approved and paid invoices submitted by Bennett's company.
CALCASIEU PARISH - The Louisiana Department of Economic Development says Sasol Limited, a South African energy and chemicals company, will do a feasibility study for possible construction of a $4 billion ethylene complex. The study will focus on building the project near Sasol's current complex in Westlake. No word on how many jobs the move could bring or when a final decision will be made.
