CONSUMER ALERT (NBC33) — Smucker’s is recalling 16-ounce jars of its Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky due to a possible Salmonella contamination.
The Ohio-based company voluntarily recalled the jars. They say those involved in the recall would have been purchased in the last week. They have a “best if used by” date of August 3, 2012 and August 4, 2012.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
So far no illnesses have been reported.
