BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Only a week remains until the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday. But this year, some holiday shoppers say they're fed up with stores changing their holiday tradition.
A growing number of retailers are moving up their Friday sales to Thursday, which is Thanksgiving Day. Stores such as Toys ‘R Us and Wal-Mart say they are open for shoppers beginning at 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.
Tanger Outlet Mall in Gonzales is also opening at 10:00 p.m. Target, Macy's, Best Buy and more are also moving up their sales and opening their doors at midnight Friday.
"This year retailers are taking control and saying, ‘Hey, I need that consumer to come into my store to do their Christmas shopping and I want to get them as early as possible," Miro Copic, SDSU Marketing Professor, explained.
But the changing times means more workers must leave their families earlier on thanksgiving and shoppers have to cut their turkey time short, too.
Analysts say the change reflects the modern work environment and more executives are also taking on holiday hours as well.
