LOUISIANA (NBC33) — The number of first-time filers for unemployment are up here in Louisiana, according to figures from the state's labor department.
The number rose by more than 200 over last week. However, total claims over the past month have seen a decline though, and the Louisiana Workforce Commission says that's a sign that things are getting better.
"The economy is turning around,” said Jay Augustine with the LWC. “We're doing the right things here in Louisiana. We're moving forward and we're very optimistic about that."
Right now, the unemployment rate in Louisiana is less than seven percent, which is more than two percent less than the national average.
