NBC NEWS — A 9 year-old girl was found alive Sunday evening after being trapped in a car for two days after a wreck that killed her father.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol 39-year-old Douglas Landon of Cove City and his 9 year-old daughter Jordan left for the store around 10 p.m. Friday night and they didn't come home.
Officials say on Saturday morning the girl's mother reported them missing to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.
Then around 5:30 p.m. Sunday a man walking on Highway 55 in Cove City saw a vehicle in a ditch completely turned over.
Officials say Landon and the girl were inside that vehicle.
Landon was found dead; the 9-year-old was found alive.
Officials say Jordan survived by eating Pop-Tarts and drinking Gatorade.
They say she was trapped in the vehicle for two days.
Troopers say Douglas Landon was driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph when the car ran off the road to the right and went into a steep ditch bank. The car then went airborne and landed upside down on its top.
Jordan was pinned in the car upside down; troopers say you could not see the car from the roadway.
The 9-year-old suffered minor injuries, but is expected to be okay.
Troopers say no alcohol is suspected at this point.
