LAKE CHARLES, LA. (NBC33) — The Lake Charles Police Department is mourning the loss of a longtime member of the K-9 force.
Breston, a 14-year-old Belgian Malinois, died peacefully Wednesday after suffering from health problems and old age.
During his nine years with the department, the canine served alongside 18-year department veteran Sergeant Kevin Jones, working to apprehend numerous criminals and help seize various narcotics and currency.
K-9 Breston was one of the first dogs included in the implementation of the K-9 unit at the Lake Charles Police Department.
Police K-9’s have been a major asset to the local department, saving numerous man-hours and helping minimize officers’ risk of life-threatening injury or death. “He was a natural at it—you’d show him once and he would get it…his work ethic was incredible,” Sgt. Jones recalled of his longtime partner. “I’ll miss him terribly.”
“Others call you a dog, but my friend you are much more – you were the best partner I could have asked for” ~ Sgt. Kevin L. Jones
A police motorcade escorted Breston to his resting place on Wednesday, and he will always be remembered as one of us.
