BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — WARNING: Some of the video attached to this story could be considered disturbing by some viewers. Please note that the video is not appropriate for children.
Just a few days ago a video was posted on YouTube and shows a Texas Judge repeatedly beating his then 16-year-old daughter with a belt, and insulting her while he was doing it. Lisa Rhett now lives in Baton Rouge, and knows Judge William Adams. Now, she’s shocked and wonders she wonders how something like that could ever happen.
The video shows Adams, a Texas Family Court Judge, disciplining his daughter, but in a violent and excessive way. The incident happened seven-years ago in a tiny town called Rockport. Lisa Rhett lived in that small town for 15 years, and moved to Baton Rouge a month ago.
“Rockport's a tiny town,” Rhett says. “Everybody knows everybody and for it to be put on the map in such an ugly way - it was kind of shocking.”
Rhett says the man on the video is very out of character for the judge she thought she knew very well.
"I was shocked and I had to watch it to be sure that was him ‘cause I didn't believe it - I didn't think he was that kind of father and I’ve never seen him lose his temper.”
In Texas, Judge Adams rules on child abuse cases, and sees kids in his court every day. That's the reason why Rhett says she's so confused.
"He was always fair and understanding - he always seemed even tempered - willing to hear the story of the person - and he always made fair and good calls.”
As a mother of four children, Rhett says she knows all too well the woes of raising children. And though she also has questions about why Hilary, Adam’s daughter, posted this video, she says there’s no reason it should have ever come to this.
"I know raising teenagers is not easy, but I don't think that excuses that,” she says.
The five year statue of limitations has run out in this case, so the judge won't face any criminal charges. However, Texas officials are looking into the case. They say they are conducting an investigation, and it could mean the judge could be taken off the bench.
If that doesn't happen, Judge Adams could remain in the court. He's up for re-election in three years.
