BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — For the second year in row police in East Baton Rouge Parish want you to turn in illegal guns. Those who participate, you could get a gas card from Circle K.
Last Year's program took more than 260 guns off the streets. As a result, Circle K gave out more than $16,000 in gas certificates.
“If they don't hesitate about giving them money for the guns they'll go ahead and bring the guns in,” Diana Callahan, Baton Rouge resident, says.
Callahan has lived in Baton Rouge for years. She says this program is badly needed in the Capitol City.
“Our message is simple - if you have an unsecure handgun or assault style weapon, take advantage of this and turn it in,” EBR Mayor-President Kip Holden, said.
The buyback program is set for Saturday, Nov. 19. It will run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Anyone who drops off a gun, no questions asked, but they'll leave with a gas card:
$50 – Any gun under .380 caliber
$100 – Any non assault weapon over .380 caliber
$200 – Assault Weapons
“That's what we're trying to stop here,” EBR District Attorney Hillar Moore, explains. “The unsecured weapons that are just left around that should not be.”
Though Callahan admits this program won't fix the problem, “I don't think you'll ever be safe - it’s just the principal of turning the guns in hopes of turning the guns in for money - I think they'll benefit for that,” it'll at the very least save lives, even if it's just a few.
Something the mayor, district attorney, and Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White say desperately needs to happen. They say this is just another program to accomplish that goal.
“We stand ready to employ any measure that will bring peace and civility to our homes and communities and make people safer,” Chief White says.
