NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Lady Liberty is celebrating a big birthday.
The 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty began with a naturalization ceremony.
125 immigrants from more than 40 countries became U.S. citizens.
The statue was a gift of friendship to the U.S. from the people of France, dedicated in front of then President Grover Cleveland on October 28th, 1886.
The celebration includes plenty of nods to the statue's French heritage.
It will continue into the night with a 12 minute fireworks display set to patriotic music ignited from two barges right next to the statue as well as from Liberty Island.
The statue will get a rest after her big day.
The interior will be closed down starting Saturday for one year to complete a $27 million renovation project.
