BELLE ROSE, LA (NBC33) — Deputies in Assumption Parish are looking for whoever they say robbed an 88-year-old man in a cemetery. Now, people just going to remember loved ones say they're looking over their shoulder in a place they shouldn't have to.
Mark Landry comes to the St. Ann Cemetery whenever he wants to remember his mom. But now, he's doing it more on guard than he ever has before.
“When you got be careful coming to the graveyard, that's a pretty sad situation,” Landry said.
Deputies say an 88-year-old graveyard worker was wrapping up his day here when he was robbed. We're told someone went up to him from behind, and stole the man's wallet right out of his back pocket.
Landry says of all the places for crime to happen, he'd never expect in a graveyard, against a man who's almost 90 years old.
“People like that shouldn't be on the streets,” Landry said. “But unfortunately you don't know who they are until something like that happens.”
Right now, deputies don't have a suspect, and until they find whoever's responsible.
“Very, very, very had human being, I’d imagine.”
Landry says he's not back here alone, and he doesn't think anyone should.
“I don't think it's a good idea for people to come by themselves now, especially older people.”
Something he thought he'd never say in a place that's supposed to be quiet, and peaceful.
