BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — Janie LaPrairie's hair salon is often sought out for a special reason. That's because she offers a service that you can't find just anywhere.
"They come from New Orleans. They come from Lafayette," she says.
LaPrairie customizes wigs for cancer patients, women going through chemotherapy.
"We cut it down, take a lot of the hair out of it," she explains. "If it's a human hair wig, we highlight it or color it to match their [hair.]"
In some cases, she cuts hair off of the wig and sews it into hats. It's a way to give the women a variety of different looks. And it's more than just a hairstyle. LaPrairie gets to know her customers, and when the time comes to shave their heads, she's the one who does it.
"It's about sharing emotions," she explains. "Sometimes I cry with them. Sometimes I laugh with them. It's a wonderful way to give back through our careers."
Twenty years ago, LaPrairie's mother was diagnosed with cancer. She styled her mother's wigs, and realized, there were others who would need the same service.
"What I want people to know is there's someone out there that you can come and talk to about it, get advice, and not be overwhelmed by the situation."
For LaPrairie, making each woman feel gorgeous is her way to give back. "She says, 'Janie you're an angel' and I said 'no I'm not. I'm a hairdresser.'"
