NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Celebration turned to clashes with NYPD officers Friday morning as protesters took to the streets in lower Manhattan.
The confrontation between marchers and police resulted in several arrests and followed a peaceful gathering at the park.
Protesters had declared victory in a building stand-off after the city and park owners backed down from clearing the space demonstrators have occupied for nearly a month in order to cleanup.
The protests against social inequality and corporate greed that began in New York City have turned into a nationwide movement with demonstrations and rallies taking shape in nearly 200 cities.
A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows just over a third of Americans now support the protesters.
In recent days, some demonstrations have escalated in cities from Boston to Seattle.
In all, 14 protesters were arrested in this mornings clashes with police.
More demonstrations are planned for the weekend.
