BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — The wait is officially over. The newest iPhone hit shelves all over the nation Friday morning, sending Apple addicts to stores before sunrise.
Web developer, Tom Marra, was one of those people. "We did watch the sunrise," he says.
He made sure to stake out a spot early to be one of the first to take home the iPhone 4S. "I was here at one in the morning," he laughs. "It's always funny when your friends tell you that you're crazy to do this."
It wasn't long before he had company. By the time the AT&T store on Siegan Lane opened at 8AM, a line of eager shoppers wrapped around the building.
"I wanted to make sure I got here," says Sean Sexton. "I figure it's better to come here than come late and not get a phone."
Across the street at Verizon, it was the same story. Dozens of people lined up to get their hands on the new gadget.
"One thing is for sure. People love the iPhone," says Dustin Gomez. He's the Verizon assistant district manager for Baton Rouge. "We love the iPhone and our customers want it."
The much anticipated 4S is an upgrade from its predecessors. It's faster, and has a new camera, but the big selling point is the built-in personal assistant, Siri.
"You give the command and it tells you. You say 'should I wear a raincoat today' and it pulls up the weather," says Cathy Miller with AT&T.
iPhone fans couldn't wait to put Siri to the test.
"I'm gonna make up questions and see if she can answer them," says Sexton.
"It's going to be really neat to talk to my phone and have her talk back," adds Marra.
After hours of anticipation, the iPhone finally made it's big debut, and for fans, like Marra, it was well worth the wait. "It's the last real iPhone. It's the last thing Steve Jobs had his hands on," he says. "It's really sad that he's gone, and it's really amazing what he left us."
The iPhone 4S is available on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint networks.
