Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — One man is dead, another is being called a hero Thursday morning, after a fire destroys a home on Summers Street in Denham Springs near Bay Street and Range.
A 911 call came in around 3 am. The first person on the scene was Denham Springs police officer, Jarod Kreamer. The duplex was completely engulfed in flames, but we're told Officer Kreamer could see a woman inside, unconscious. He was able to get in and drag her out before being overcome by smoke.
The woman and Officer Kreamer are both being treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation and are expected to be okay. The man who died, 64 year old Willie David Robertson, lived alone on the other side of the duplex. We're told there were no smoke detectors in either unit. A third person, the sister on the woman rescued got out okay.
Fire Marshall Butch Browning tells NBC33 News he thinks the fire started in the bedroom of the unit where the women lived. That's where investigators are focusing. He says Robertson likely died of smoke inhalation.
