BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A special Catholic mass in Baton Rouge this morning to celebrate the Franciscan missionaries of Our Lady's Century of Service in Louisiana.
On this day, Sept. 30, 100 years ago the Franciscan missionaries of Our Lady journeyed to the United States to provide healthcare in Louisiana. Since then they have opened a number of hospitals and nursing schools across the state, including Our Lady of the Lake right here in Baton Rouge.
Hundreds of guests gathered at the Maryville Convent this morning to pay tribute to those missionaries, and their work, including East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden, Congressman Bill Cassidy, and Governor Bobby Jindal.
Throughout the years, more than 150 our lady sisters have left their mark on the state, involved in everything from healthcare and finance, to legal and educational services.
