BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — A jury has found Jeffery Lee Guillory guilty of the murder of Renee Newman. He now faces a mandatory life sentence.
The defense had argued in its closing statements that the fact that authorities did a poor job collecting and analyzing enough evidence from the crime scene was enough to create reasonable doubt. They also admitted that being denied the chance to introduce testimony linking serial killer Sean Gillis to the murder hurt their case.
The prosecution though said D.N.A. evidence and the testimony of Guillory's previous victim, Johnny Martinez, was what convinced the jury.
It took the jury less than an hour to reach their verdict. Guillory's official sentencing hearing is set for November 10, 2011.
