You've heard of fried twinkies, fried candy bars, maybe even fried butter. So what's next?
At the Texas State Fair later this month, fried bubble gum will make its debut in a competition for the best tasting and most creative fried food.
Last year, it was all about the fried beer, and the year before that, fried butter.
But this year, Justin Martinez is going bubble gum pink. "It almost has that blow up effect where it almost looks like someone's blowing a bubble."
Martinez says the idea came from one of his employees, and this year, he's hoping his Fried Bubble Gum wins top honors at the Big Tex Choice Awards.
"What we do is we infuse the marshmallow with bubble gum extract and that's where it gets the flavor,” stated Martinez. “And with a little bit of blue icing on top and then those chicklets to give it some color, it gives it a nice appeal."
While he admits the fried bubble gum is creative, he says he has some stiff competition, such as fried salsa.
"Just think about if you were to have some nice warm salsa with the cheese in the middle and a crunchy crust on the outside,” said fried salsa creator Isaac Rousso. “And you get to dip it in some sauce that's what you get."
Rousso says it's good enough to win, but that will be up to the judges.
