Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says a 15-year-old shot himself after pointing a handgun at a teacher, then raising the gun and shooting at a wall above her head.
After that one shot, says Webre, the boy ran into a bathroom next to the class and shot himself in the head. Sgt. Lesley Hill-Peters, a sheriff's spokeswoman, said the boy was in critical but stable condition at Terrebonne General Hospital in Houma.
The shooting happened about 9 a.m. Monday during third period at Larose-Cut Off Middle School, which has about 500 students in grades six through eight.
Webre says the eighth-grader would not have ordinarily been in that classroom, and the teacher had never taught him. Investigators do not yet have a motive.
Larose is about 43 miles southwest of New Orleans.
More details will be available as the story develops.
