BATON ROUGE, La — LSU men’s basketball player Matt Derenbecker of Metairie announced on Monday that he has decided to withdraw from LSU because of personal matters.
“After some discussion with my family and the coaching staff, I have decided to take some time away from basketball to address some personal matters,” said Derenbecker. “In doing so, I will withdraw from LSU immediately. I wish nothing but the best for my teammates and coaches as they move forward in continuing to rebuild the program.”
Derenbecker, in his first year at LSU, averaged 6.5 points in 32 games. He averaged 8.3 points, while starting 15 of the 16 Southeastern Conference games.
“Matt is going through a tough time right now,” said LSU Coach Trent Johnson. “Playing basketball is not important. We wish him the best as he moves forward.”
