Senior running back Charles Scott and a stringent defense led the White team to a 27-0 victory over the Purple squad Saturday night in LSU's annual Spring Game at Tiger Stadium.
Scott rushed for two scores, junior running back Richard Murphy found the endzone in the third quarter and sophomore cornerback Patrick Peterson closed out the Spring Game with a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown to give the White Squad a 27-0 win.
For the White team, sophomore sensation Jordan Jefferson had a strong performance completing eight of his 10 passes for 97 yards.
Highly touted freshman quarterback Russell Shepard completed seven of 12 passes for 70 yards to lead the Purple squad. Fellow freshman quarterback Chris Garrett had a solid outing for the Purple team going 8-14 for 49 yards.
Scott led all rushers with 70 yards on 11 carries. Shepard led the purple squad in rushing with 27 yards on eight carries.
Senior receiver Brandon LaFell collected five receptions for 59 yards for the White squad.
Freshman receiver Chris Tolliver stood out for the Purple team with six receptions for 43 yards.
Shepard put the fans on their feet on the first play from scrimmage with an 18-yard pass to Tim Molton. Shepard continued to push the Purple team down the field with his quick feet by scrambling for 12 yards on two carries. Pushed to a fourth down on Whites 33-yard line, a 50-yard field goal attempt by junior Josh Jasper fell short.
With six minutes left in the first quarter, sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson hit LaFell for a 28-yard strike that lead to Scotts first score from three yards out to give White a 7-0 lead with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter.
Scott found the end zone for the second time with a one-yard run to the right corner of the end zone with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The highlight for the defense in the first half was when linebacker Perry Riley intercepted a Garrett pass and returned it for 37 yards to Purples 43-yard line with two minutes left in the first half.
The White squad went into halftime with a 14-0 advantage.
The White team continued its strong running attack in the second half when Murphy extended White's lead to 21-0 with an eight-yard touchdown run with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter.
With the clock running throughout the second half, the Purple squad had little time to make up ground.
With less than 1:30 remaining in the game, Shepard heaved a pass downfield that was picked by Peterson who raced 69 yards to the endzone to seal the White teams shutout.
Along with Riley and Petserson, junior Lazarius Levingston came up big for the White squad on defense as he notched two sacks for 11 yards lost and forced a fumble.
For the Purple squad, senior defensive back Chris Hawkins and senior linebacker Ace Foyil each collected six tackles. Freshman defensive end Chancey Aghayere had a sack for seven yards loss and a forced fumble.
