NBC NEWS — Thousands of families in Louisiana may be cashing in on unpaid child support.
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services says more than 9,000 people who filed claims with BP after the oil spill owe back child support. They've used that information to reroute the money to families that have been looking for money from deadbeat parents.
So far, the program has brought in more than five million dollars.
One case brought in over $30,000 in back payments.
DCF says they look at one time payments as an easy way to collect money owed.
