BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — Three friends are on a journey to Buffalo, NY through Baton Rouge, LA, after a two and a half decade detour.
Their first attempt to circle the country in 1986 ended in a bad crash. Two of the cyclists, Dave Cywinski and Tony Glosek were seriously injured. The third rider, Dan Alexander had to finish the last 2500 miles alone. Back then the guys were riding to raising money for a Boys and Girls Club in Buffalo.
“We were three poor kids,” said Dan Alexander. “We didn’t have much and this was a home away from home, a safe haven and it kept us off the streets.”
Now, Dan Alexander, Dave Cywinski and Tony Glosek have set out to complete that last leg together, traveling 2500 miles in 25 days. The money they raise will go to build an athletics complex in their old neighborhood.
“Right now, there's no ball diamond for them to play,” says Tony Glosek. “There's no basketball for them to shoot, just shoot some hoops. What they need is they need teamwork. Just as we are a team, they need to learn that you can't do everything on your own all the time; you need help from your friends, from your brothers and your family.”
The cyclists will finish their trip in Buffalo on August 22nd. To follow their journey, and make a donation, go to www.biketripforkids.com .
