NBC NEWS — A wide variety of costumed characters will be around the San Diego Convention Center over the next four days.
A Summer ritual for the past four decades known as the "Comic Con" has become the go to place for fans of the fantastic, and the people who create it.
Last week belonged to Potter mania, this week will belong to the twi-hards.
Since Monday, fans of the Twilight saga have camped out outside the Convention Center.
Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are all expected to take part in the panel discussion of the next installment of the "Twilight" saga, 'Breaking Dawn', which opens in November.
The trio's appearance is the marquee event for day one of Comic Con.
A four day convention of all things science fiction, fantasy and super heroes, both in print and on the big screen.
"At this point, Comic Con is about every aspect of pop culture," said Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franich.
One hundred and thirty thousand people, many dressed for the occasion will attend the convention.
"Comic books didn't sell out to pop culture. Pop culture kind of found its way to comic books," said Franich.
In fact, one of the biggest comic book heroes, Spider Man, will grab the spotlight Friday when the , Andrew Garfield appears to tease next summer's big screen reboot.
"They're going to give it the full 360 degrees, like here's what you can expect from the movie. Now, love us and forget about the earlier movies,"said Franich.
It's a part of what annually makes San Diego the mecca for all things fantastical.
