BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — One local teen got the trip of a lifetime after undergoing several months of painful radiation therapy. It was all thanks to a Louisiana foundation that makes "dreams come true."
Caroline Roy has been struggling with a tumor since she was 11 years old. Doctors removed it, but it kept coming back.
"I'd always had this fright that it was going to come back," Roy says. "I'd always had this bad, horrible feeling."
Last summer, Roy's worst fears were confirmed. Doctors worried that the tumor could be cancerous, so they suggested radiation therapy. It lasted three months.
"It was really rough and it was very painful," she says.
Roy's condition made her a possible candidate for Dreams Come True of Louisiana, a foundation that grants dreams to kids with life threatening illnesses.
"I remember my mom saying something about she was going to apply for it, and I was like, 'No, no, no. Please leave that to kids, who deserve it or kids that are sicker than me.'"
Her mother applied anyway. Dreams Come True decided Roy was the perfect candidate for their program. They decided to give her a week-long trip to her dream destination, Santa Barbara.
""I didn't feel deserving of it, but they were like, we're going to grant this girl's dream."
Roy says her trip was jam-packed with adventure. She even made time for a college visit. She says she wants the organization to continue reaching out to kids like her.
"Someone who had to go through absolute misery, I think they deserve a little bit of their dream, a little bit of heaven," she says. "They really do make absolute dreams come true."
