HAMMOND, La — Southeastern Louisiana University football coach Mike Lucas announced Wednesday that quarterback Nathan Stanley, formerly of Ole Miss, has transferred to play for the Lions beginning in the 2011 season.
Stanley, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior, will be eligible to play immediately for the Lions, members of the Southland Conference in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Stanley, a native of Tahlequah, Okla., will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“We felt like we could use another quarterback with game experience and we’re excited about having the opportunity of adding Nathan to our program,” Lucas said. “We’re glad that he can be here for the remainder of summer classes so we can get him out there and throwing with our players and get him acclimated to our program before (fall) camp starts in August.”
In two seasons at Ole Miss, Stanley completed 28-of-55 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns. Stanley saw action in four games for the Rebels in 2010, earning a start in the season opener against Jacksonville State. He threw for 261 yards on 17-of-32 passes for Ole Miss as he served as the backup to Jeremiah Masoli.
Stanley saw action in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2009 with his first passing attempt and completion coming against Southeastern. He completed 6-of-9 passes with a touchdown against UAB and saw action in the Rebels’ victory over Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl.
“We feel with (junior) Brian Young returning at quarterback, he was the only one we had with game experience. By adding Nathan into that group, we’re going to allow him to compete for the starting job.”
Stanley was rated the No. 89 player in the nation by Sports Illustrated coming out of high school, the No. 11 ranked player in the state of Oklahoma and the No. 23 quarterback nationally by Rivals.com. He threw for 2,153 yards and 32 TDs as a senior at Sequoyah High School and was named a second-team all-state selection by the Tulsa World.
Southeastern will report for fall camp on Aug. 2 with its season opener scheduled for Sept. 3 against Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome.
