Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) —
The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board has unanimously approved a $413 million operating budget for 2012. The new fiscal year starts July 1.
To balance spending, the board had to dip into its reserves, even after cutting $33 million from the plan.
One service that got chopped was bus routes for some gifted students in the district. The school board eliminated 16 bus driver positions who were assigned to routes with 30 or less students each. Now those students will have a longer commute, including a stop at the transportation hub for many.
The board estimates the change will save the school system $850,000.
Members against the cuts say it will deter students away from gifted programs at public schools.
