PLAQUEMINE, La (WVLA)--A Plaquemine woman is alive tonight because of the kindness of a stranger.

An elderly woman was trapped inside her house when it caught fire just after 11 am today.

Plaquemine firefighters and police rushed to the scene, but it was a passer by, and former fireman that is the real hero.

Gerald Persilver ran in and out of the flames several times before finding the woman inside and carrying her to safety.

Persilver says he was just in the right place at the right time

"I was gonna stay home and said no i'm gonna do what i gotta do, if it would have been for that, she could have been in real trouble," said Persilver.

The house is a total loss.

The woman is still in the hospital tonight being treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire is still under investigation, but arson is not suspected.
