Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — East Baton Rouge - U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu in Baton Rouge to encourage state lawmakers to stay on the aggressive track for education reform. Louisiana's senior senator spoke to the Press Club of Baton Rouge. Landrieu says she commends Governor Jindal for making education his priority this session. She does disagree with Jindal's voucher for every child who attends a failing school. Landrieu says until Louisiana improves the education of its children, the state will never thrive economically.
Evangeline - The Vidrine Elementary School family is mourning the loss of one of their own. A fire in a storage building at the school early this morning led investigators to a heart-breaking discovery. Donald Thomas, the school's head custodian for more than 20 years died inside that fire.
It took more than 2 dozen firefighters to control the blaze, which caused the cancellation of classes at Vidrine elementary and a feeder school, Evangeline Central, but right now the focus is on finding answers to what started the fire, and remembering a dedicated employee who meant so much to so many.
Orleans - New Orleans police said they are investigating a triple shooting in Central City. Police said it happened around 8:30 a.m. near the area of First and South Prieur streets. Police said a grandmother was leaving her home to go to the laundry mat. As she was loading up her car to leave, police said she was shot in the stomach. The woman's family said that she was an innocent bystander in the shooting. Two men who were in a nearby car were also shot in the incident. Police said one was shot in the arm and the other was shot in the leg. One person was being questioned by police, but no arrests have been made.
