Pedestrian killed in St. Helena Parish crash
ST. HELENA — Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, State Police began investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred on LA 43 just before the Livingston Parish line.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Charles Nelson, 39, of Independence, was traveling southbound on LA 43. The pedestrian, Joe Freeman, 76, of Independence, was standing in front of his home on the edge of the road.
Detectives believe that Freeman bent over to pick up an unknown object and lost his balance while attempting to stand up.
Freeman stumbled into the southbound lane and into the path of Nelson’s vehicle. Freeman was hit by the car and pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office.
Police found that alcohol was not a factor on the part of Nelson.
Freeman was wearing dark clothing, and a toxicology report is pending.
No charges are pending at this time, but the crash remains under investigation.
