In August 2011 the Companion Animal Alliance took over the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Shelter. The group inherited a facility that is supposed to hold just over 200 animals, but today the shelter holds close to 400 animals.

"A dog that would normally be house broken they have to stay in a kennel longer," said CAA'S director Kim Sherlaw. "They don't understand why they are not getting to go outside and go for a walk anymore."

Over crowding has been a big problem for the group. But Sherlaw say CAA is working on new ways of clearing up space for it's animals.

"One of our goals is to have no more than two dogs per kennel in the stray area," said Sherlaw. "So, that they have the space to move around and they have a better environment while they are living here. And, we can properly clean and car for those animals."

Now CAA is going through and looking at it's operations to help pump up adoptions and help protect more animals.

"Definitely the shelter is is one where we have to look at our cleaning protocols , our capacity in the shelter, and how we rout those animals so that everyone gets an equal chance," said Sherlaw.

Right now about a 60 percent of the animals at the shelter get adopted or relocated to no-kill partner projects .

The goal is to get to a 90 percent adoption rate to earn official no-kill status. But Sherlaw says that takes time.

"You have to balance your adoptions with spay and neuter efforts, with foster efforts, and with rescue group efforts," said Sherlaw. When you put all those things in motion, that's when you more towards your higher live release rate for the no kill model."

Sherlaw says there are several ways you can help CAA reach it's goal.

First help by adopting a pet. Second make sure your pets are spayed and neutered. Third volunteer time, money, or supplies to the shelter.
