ZACHARY, La (WVLA) Assistant Police Chief Bruce Chaisson is appealing the decision by the Zachary Police Department to relieve him of duty on April 21, 2008. Chaisson was fired after the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Board found he was unfit to hold the position.
Several Zachary Police Department officer testified in March 2008 that Chaisson created a hostile work environment. Over 20 residents of Zachary also testified that he harrased them, telling people in town that he did not like what he was going to get them.
The Defense Attorney for Chaisson says he was not given a fair shot at defending himself, because defense attornies were present during the testimonies and they were not recorded or transcribed.
Chaisson argues today that he does not know why he was fired and was not given a fair chance to clear his name.
The witnesses who appeared in 2008, along with several officers are at City Hall today to testify for a second time, but only one took the stand. After hours of objections the Board decided to continue the hearing in October, after the Defense has more time to prepare.
If Chaisson wins this appeal, it could have repercussions for civil service boards across the country. He could also be reinstated as Zachary Assistant Police Cheif and receive back pay for the two and a half years since his firing.
