Zachary, La (NBC33) — The town of Zachary has a new Interim Police Chief tonight.

The mayor and council appointed Assistant Police Chief David Courtney as the acting chief effective immediately.

Courtney, a 28 year department veteran, will fill the position left by Chief John Herty, who passed away on March 12.

The election for permanent chief will be held this October.
